Return of Ryan Adams!
Ryan Adams just announced the release of a new studio album, Ashes and Rain on October 11th.  After breaking up the Cardinals after the release of Cardinology in 2008, Ryan Adams essentially disappeared from the music scene, and hopefully this album and the European tour he has booked are a sign that his short lived retirement from music is over.

Jason Isbell Rocks the Turf Club
Man, these guys must feel like shit every morning. That thought kept running through my head as I watched Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit down whiskey shots passed up to the stage by generous audience members at the Turf Club in St. Paul, Minnesota. With plenty of drinking, loud guitars and rowdy singalongs, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are like the ultimate fun bar band. And that’s...

Best Albums of 2010 26-30
30. The Black Keys- Brothers By now, we know what to expect from The Black Keys.  When it comes to writing infectious, bluesy guitar riffs, few are better than the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.  Brothers finds the Black Keys expanding their drums and guitar duo, adding keyboards and bass to the mix, resulting in a fuller sound.  But the heavy guitar and drums are still the center of the sound,...

Whatever You Do, Take Care Of Your Shoes:... →
It’s hard to believe that 15 years ago today Jerry Garcia passed away. Along with the other Grateful Dead members, Jerry pioneered the jamband movement, paving the way for other bands to shine with experimental music. A gifted musician, Jerry could deliver honest bluegrass, soulful ballads,…

Dawes Rock Hoboken
Musician and producer Jonathan Wilson moved to California’s Laurel Canyon in 2005, and soon friends like Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes began to stop by his place to hang out and play some loose, fun music.  Soon Robinson and Wilson were leading what have become legendary Wednesday night jams at Wilson’s home with some of yesterday’s finest musicians- Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead and...

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Stay Gold
Stay Gold is the first release of another reconfigured Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey lineup, which welcomes new bassist Jeff Harshbarger.  Founding member Reed Mathis left the band in early 2009, after the masterful Winterwood album.  But Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey are used to change as the one consistency of the band over the past fifteen years has been founding member keyboardist Brian Haas.  The current...

Garage A Trois Power Patriot Review
Garage A Trois is a modern day jazz supergroup, featuring Stanton Moore (Galactic) on drums, Marco Benevento (Marco Benevento Trio, Benevento/Russo Duo, Surprise Me Mr. Davis) on keyboards, Skerik (Skerik’s Syncopated Septet, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade) on saxophone, and Mike Dillon (Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle, Les Claypoll’s Fancy Band) on vibes and percussion.  The...

Furthur @ Gelston Castle
Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead performed at Gelston Castle in Herkimer, NY last weekend and the event echoed old school Grateful Dead concerts not only musically but also in terms of the massive traffic and utter disorganization surrounding venu.  Gelston Castle is an ideal concert venue- miles of rolling, grassy hills, great, full sound for an outdoor venue,...

Furthur @ Coney Island
Furthur, the new Grateful Dead project featuring Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, has been nearly universally praised by deadheads for putting on the best live shows since Jerry Garcia’s passing.  After five years apart with their bands Ratdog and Phil Lesh & Friends, Weir and Lesh reunited last spring with Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart to tour as The Dead.  Weir and...

Big Light Shines Bright
San Francisco’s Big Light showed New Yorkers that rock and roll is still alive and well with their energetic performance last Friday night at the Brooklyn Bowl.  Big Light released their debut album, Animals In Bloom last March, and are quickly becoming one of the best rock and roll bands in the country.  Big Light are following the path of bands like Wilco and Dr. Dog but are most...

Mountain Jam 2010
Another Mountain Jam has come and gone, and as usual the weekend meant plenty of cold, rain and great music.  The lineup for Mountain Jam this year represented a bit of a departure from traditional jamband heavy festival lineups, featuring a stronger emphasis on singer/songwriters and Americana roots rock.  Most of the bands were hand selected by festival host Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule,...

Grayson Capps- Wail & Ride Review
There’s a scene in the recent Jeff Bridges movie Crazy Heart, where Bridge’s character, the fictional country singer Bad Blake, explains that his songs come “from life, unfortunately.”  From the first notes of this album, it’s clear that Grayson Capps songs’ come from a similar place.  On his album Wail and Ride, he tells stories about ordinary people in a style...

Check Out Great New EP from Surprise Me Mr. Davis!
The only fault with Surprise Me Mr. Davis’ The Man Who Eats Morning For Breakfast is that it is an EP, not a full length album.  After playing together live for six years, they’ve written more than enough songs for a whole album and it would’ve been nice to hear a full album with a few more songs. The music is simply flawless, and even though it’s only an EP, it may be my...

New Marco Benevento Album Between Needles &...
Over the past few years, Marco Benevento has created some of the most interesting music out there with the Benevento/Russo duo, Garage A Trois, and his own trio. With his new album, Between the Needles & Nightfall, Benevento continues to create music that is exploratory and refreshing. More than anything, the album represents a further refining and expanding of the sound that he began to...
